From Finance to Construction: Michelle Sapp’s Inspiring Journey 🏗️

Career pivots are never easy, but they can lead to incredible success stories. Michelle Sapp’s journey from finance to construction is a shining example of resilience, determination, and leadership. Now a Project Manager at EMJ, Michelle has tackled some seriously impressive projects while breaking down barriers in a male-dominated industry.

Leading Complex Projects with Poise and Professionalism

Michelle’s dedication to excellence is evident in her leadership on some of EMJ’s most prominent projects. Recently, she successfully managed a $24 million Power Center project in Georgetown, TN. Despite the high-profile nature of the project, Michelle maintained composure, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to quality.

“Her ability to stay organized and communicate effectively earned her the trust and respect of subcontractors—many of whom now specifically request to work with her on future projects,” said Trey Hall, Vice President of Construction at EMJ.

This respect wasn’t handed to her; she earned it through consistent performance, clear communication, and a commitment to quality. And she didn’t stop there!

Currently, Michelle is leading another major undertaking—the $80 million Lookout Stadium project in Chattanooga. She runs bi-weekly Owner-Architect-Contractor (OAC) meetings with five ownership groups, five design firms, and over 30 attendees, demonstrating her leadership and communication skills. With every challenge, she continues to prove her ability to handle complex logistics and foster collaboration among diverse teams.

Challenges Faced—and Conquered

Michelle’s journey has not been without challenges—particularly those unique to women in the construction industry. As one of the few women in her role, Michelle has faced the difficulties of earning respect in a male-dominated environment, overcoming self-doubt, and navigating the lack of female mentors in construction operations.

She’s always been open about her experiences, finding support from both male and female mentors, and using every obstacle as an opportunity to grow. Now, she’s paying it forward by mentoring newer employees, creating the supportive environment she once needed herself.

Building a Culture of Communication and Collaboration

Michelle’s leadership style is rooted in open communication and collaboration. Whether drafting clear, diligent meeting minutes, managing monthly cost reports, or facilitating discussions between contractors and stakeholders, she ensures that every voice is heard and every detail is accounted for. Her ability to navigate complex issues and facilitate team-based problem-solving is a hallmark of her approach.

Celebrating Excellence and Recognizing Achievement

Michelle’s hard work and dedication have not gone unnoticed. In 2023, she was named EMJ’s Most Outstanding Operations Performer, recognizing her exceptional project management and leadership skills. This honor reflects not only her technical expertise but also her unwavering commitment to fostering a team-oriented, transparent, and adaptable work environment.
